Format for performance: fixed vs. randoms

Once end use is clear, format drives cost and time on the shop floor. Fixed widths enable faster machining and more predictable cutting; random widths maximize log yield and, in flexible processes, often deliver a better cost/m². Choosing between boards (20–80 mm), beams (150×150, 200×200, 100×100) or friezes/squares (50×50, 38×38, 27×50/60/65) should be based on waste, machine setup, and cycle times. Ask your supplier for two comparable scenarios (fixed vs. random) and evaluate total cost: material + machine hours + waste.

    Grades that optimize cost and lead time (QF / QPA / A–B–C)

    Grading aligns look, function and cost; it’s not a universal “best-to-worst” ladder. In oak boards (QF1a–QF5), shifting one step up or down can mean weeks of difference and better yield per m² without compromising the outcome. For beams, QPA/QP1A distinguishes superior selection vs. technical standard; for friezes/squares, A/B/C controls how much variation is acceptable.     Drying: plan by thickness and species (27/40/52 mm)

Drying 27 mm is not the same as drying 52 mm, and beech, ash and oak behave differently in the kiln.     • Week 1–2: lot assignment and kiln/stack scheduling.
    • Week 2–6/8: kiln drying (range depends on 27/40/52 mm and species).
    • Week 7–8/9: conditioning (acclimation, moisture/flatness checks).
    • Week 8–9/10: loading & transport, depending on destination and rotation.

    If the PO arrives well-defined, some stages can overlap (e.g., assignment while drying is underway), but only if specifications remain stable.

    Consistent documentation

    If your project requires FSC®/PEFC, Chain of Custody must be visible and consistent across documents: the claim (e.g., FSC Mix Credit / PEFC Certified) should appear identically on PO, delivery note and invoice, alongside the supplier’s CoC code and lot/volume references.     Logistics

    Purchasing does not end at the kiln. Load dates must also be coordinated with production or site schedules, packaging and marking must be clearly defined (for example, separating mixed widths or AB grades by pack), and consolidation or partial deliveries should be considered for multi-species or multi-thickness orders. A well-structured logistics close-out prevents bottlenecks and warehouse saturation.

    Availability strategies (without raising costs)

    When flexibility is required, designing the order with built-in alternatives provides room to manoeuvre without compromising the final outcome. Offering two format options (fixed widths versus random widths) and an acceptable grade range (for example, QF2–QF3 or QF3–QF4) makes it easier to prioritise availability based on actual kiln loading. For certain interior applications, beech and ash can be viable substitutes when a strong grain pattern is not required.
